CATEX is the only impartial, global, Internet-based trading system for the reinsurance and risk-bearing industry. A licensed reinsurance intermediary, CATEX brings insurers, reinsurers, brokers, self-insureds, and others together over the Internet to match buyers and sellers of reinsurance and to transact reinsurance risks. CATEX facilitates various risks, including environmental liability, marine, aviation, auto insurance, and other lines of business. CATEX enables primary insurers and reinsurers to more widely distribute their risks, as well as to diversify the perils they insure against.

CATEX provides a flexible, secure environment for the negotiation of trades using an open "bid and ask" market, or exchange. The speed, efficiency, and flexibility of the CATEX Trading System enables insurers to fashion innovative, integrated risk management strategies and packages. CATEX provides an ideal forum to enable electronic reinsurance transactions involving cash premiums payments, as well as pure risk swaps, and subscribers can use the trading system to sell or purchase traditional reinsurance products such as quota share, per risk excess, or catastrophe excess coverage. CATEX also allows insurers and self-insured companies to purchase reinsurance directly from CATEX subscriber reinsurers. Risk-bearers can diversify their potential liabilities by gaining access to wider risk distributions at minimal costs. Parties are able to respond to listings and negotiate trades by various methods, including CATEX e-mail, real-time text dialog, on-line conferences, collaborative document processing, telephone, fax, or mail. The terms of an agreed trade can be finalized by traditional paper methods or by using the "Deal Mail" facility to construct an electronic proposal or slip. Finally, completed trades are registered with CATEX and the details of the trade are then publicized to all subscribers.

In addition, CATEX also develops computer software systems for reinsurance companies and brokers.
